Tour Overview
We’ll stay in Saintes-Maries-de-la-Mer, in the Camargue area of Provence. Just a few kilometers from the beach, our beautiful family-run hotel features traditional charm with many cultural activities nearby. Saintes-Maries-de-la-Mer was a fishing village, built on an island in the heart of the Camargue, where the Petit Rhone joins the sea. The original village was built around the Notre-Dame-de-la-Mar church. We’ll start each day with morning yoga, and will offer a variety of additional activities to acquaint you with the character of the Camargue. We’ll explore nearby towns and villages, have wine tastings, a cooking class, and learn about the gypsy traditions of the area. The Camargue has inspired many artists; Van Gogh was enthralled by the light and colors of the area, so we’ll follow his footsteps and visit some of the places where he painted, both in Saintes-Maries-de-la-Mer and Arles. We’ll explore the portside gate and ramparts of nearby Aigues-Mortes, a walled medieval town that looks much like it did in the Middle Ages, as well as Les Baux-de-Provence, considered to be the most dramatic fortress site in Provence
